Marken is located at appr. 17 km (11 miles) northeast of Amsterdam. It was separated from the mainland in the 13th century during the formation of the 'Zuiderzee'. The 3 km (2 mile) long island has an area of 2.5 square km (1 square mile) and lies appr. 2.5 km (1.5 mile) offshore. Since October the 17th 1957 it has been connected to the mainland by a causeway.
