Volendam is a small fishing village straight out of a postcard, with a harbor full of classic sailing vessels and rows of brick houses featuring great examples of 17th century Dutch architectural details.Being a typical fishing village with traditional houses and cottages, costumes and folklore, tourists have been beating a path here since 1875.
Marken has a population of less than 2000, and is well known for his traditional architecture. Many tourists have found their way to this former island, known for its colourful traditional clothing and monumental houses. Characteristic for Marken are the yards (man-made hills) where houses are built for better protection from the water.
Scenic landscapes dotted with windmills, picturesque canals, villages with charming streets, locals dressed in traditional costumes, tasty Dutch specialties, and much more awaits you when visiting Volendam and Marken. At only 10 miles from Amsterdam you will find the smalltown harbours Volendam and Marken both share a rich history of fishing and trade.
Together with a local guide dressed up in traditonal costume we will show you all nice parts of Volendam and Marken. You will taste a traditional 'stroopwafel' (famous Dutch caramel cookie waffle) at 'Woltje's Backery' we will visit Cheese Factory Volendam where you will be given an explanation/demonstration about the cheese making process (including tasting), we will visit a Wooden Shoe Factory and from Volendam to Marken we will make a nice 30 minutes boat trip.
